A literary analysis of The Red Masque of Death Research Paper

A literary analysis of The Red Masque of Death - Research Paper Example He also used gothic tales at times to raise questions about the cultural anxieties of his era†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (50). Similarly the Masque of Red Death is one of the master pieces of Poe’s works. This story depicts a tale of the lives of the aristocracy. In order to save his loyal and noble friends and their families from a fatal disease called Red Death Prince Prospero arranges for an estate where all his fellow aristocrats would be safe from the death and disease. Through this story Poe mocks the social hierarchy and its discrimination according to which the commoners should suffer all the decay and disease as stated in the story, â€Å"the external world could take care of itself† (106). Here the external world represents the commoners while the nobles are kept safe in the walls of the royal estate. Poe makes use of various stylistic and linguistic techniques in his short story to illustrate death which is the bitterest reality of life and tries to make his readers under stand that in the eyes of God and fate bloodlines hold no importance because the ultimate end of every human being is death. 2. Theme of Death The concept of death that Poe uses in the story itself represents plague. This plague can be perceived as the decaying and degeneration of human morals and ethical values, injustices of the social hierarchy as well as the invincible side of human nature that leads them to believe that this life is permanent instead of a temporary habitat. The various techniques that Poe uses to demonstrate the theme of death includes color imagery, symbol of the seven rooms and the indirect amalgamation of the concepts of Christian mythology with over all destruction and degeneration that is usually associated with death. 2.1. Color Imagery As it is also apparent from the title the red color has a lot of symbolic significance in the prose as red is the color of passion and it is also associated with anger and wrath. In terms of the title the color red can als o be interpreted as the symbolic representation of wrath of Poe that is directed towards the absurd social strictures of the society and the mentality of human beings who believe that wealth and royal bloodlines gives them the testimony and asserts that misery and suffering cannot reach them because of their superior stature in the society. As Sova also suggests, â€Å"The story also contains elements of an allegory that represents death as being inseparable despite one’s social status and all human efforts to run from it and shut it out† (110). The gradual progression of the inhabitants of Prospero’s estate from one colored room to another at the party also holds a lot of symbolic significance. As Quinn and Rosenheim also state that, â€Å"The description of luxurious chambers of prince prospero leads, step by step, to flaming scarlet of the last room, which throws its weird light against the ebony blackness of the velvet curtains† (331). The contrast of red against black is very dark yet vibrant. According to Pennell’s understanding, â€Å"†¦decorated in black the final room glows in red the two colors associated with passion and death† (55). Another interpretation of this contrasting pairing of the two colors can also be that it is Poe’s style of mocking his fellow beings according to which black symbolizes the monotonous life and ignorance of the elite class and figuratively the eminent red color reiterates a death knell or an

Ethics Of Should Abortion Be Legal Philosophy Essay

Ethics Of Should Abortion Be Legal Philosophy Essay Remember a long time ago when women died because they could not or did not want to have an infant and they attempted to terminate their pregnancy by themselves or with the help of other unprofessional? Should abortion be legal? Do you believe in Pro-Life or Pro-Choice? What do you do when circumstances come about that is not of your control or wiliness? I believe that both pro-life and pro-choice viewpoints have valid arguments.  These are the questions that we will examine briefly and what has happen since it became legal in the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision case of 1973. It is important to know all that is involved with abortion before you can make a rational choice. It is not whether it should be legal, but when it should be allowed. Abortion allows women to have the choice and can save thousands of lives of women that have tried to do it on their own. I feel that it should be legal, but only to an extent. That is what pro-choice is all about. Pro-choice is the position that also is known as pro-abortion In the United States and in China, where law requires sometimes abortion and it is also known as anti-abortion. The purpose of the pro-choice movement is to ensure that all choices remain legal. The movement argues that a human person cannot be proven, prior to the point of viability and the government does not have the right to impede a womans right to decide whether to continue a pregnancy.(Head, 2010 )   Ã‚   I do not believe in permitting abortions after ten to twelve weeks of pregnancy, because at that time is when a fetus can represent potential life.   Now do not get me wrong, I still think that we should dissuaded women from abortion, and that we should be taking more measures to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Last year over 15,000, women had abortions because of rape, incest, health or just unwanted pregnancies. Most circumstances have come about that is not of your their own control or wiliness. It is because of the Roe vs. Wade case of 1973, states that a woman and her doctor can decide when and if to abort a pregnancy but only during the first trimester. After that, the government can restrict abortion to protect the viability of the fetus. This preserves our constitutional right under our privacy rights (Roe v. Wade , 1973). In addition, another thing we do not think about that how it affects by most of the population is the ignorance when it comes to a very serious illness of mental retardation. About three percent of the people that are considered as mentally retarded and some people have adopted many slang terms, one such as retard to insult them. A lot people do not understand about their mental disabilities and so this is their way of calling them stupid, but really, they are stupid within themselves because they do not understand. Mental retardation is a term used when someone has limitations in their mental functioning and these limitations cause a child to learn and develop slower than an ordinary individual or in some cases, dont develop at all (123HelpMe.com/76990, 2010). I believe in a combination of both pro-life and pro-choice viewpoints. This brings us to the pro-life choice that does not believe that the woman has any rights to have an abortion, no matter what the circumstances are. What they are saying is that they are taking away a womans right to freedom of choice.   A woman should have the right to choose if she wants to have an abortion. They do not think about the consequences of having a child that is not wanted or as some people call them forgotten children. Pro-Life says that the government has the right or the obligation to preserve all human life. In the Catholic Church and other similar groups also prohibits, Euthanasia and assisted suicide, the death penalty and War, with only a few exceptions. In cases where the pro-life ethnic conflicts with the personal autonomy, as in the cases of abortion and assisted suicide, it is conservative. In The cases of ethic, where the pro-life have conflicts with the government policy, as in the cas e of the death penalty and war, it is liberal(Head, 2010 ). Pro-lifers also do not believe in teaching sex education; where pro-choice believes that, we should educate our children on how to handle and in the consequences that fails with proceeding with their urges that they will have in their coming of age years. The primarily conflict of pro-life and pro-choice movements are on the issues of abortion. Pro-life argues that it protects the unborn human life by the government and should not be legal, also that it is murder to abort. Have you ever looked up the definition of murder? It states that when pro-life activists call abortion murder, they are suggesting that abortion fits the definition, namely, illegal killing with malice aforethought. However, this definition fails for two reasons. First, is that abortions are not illegal and secondly, mothers hardly feel malice towards their own unborn children (123HelpMe.com/9909, 2010). The Bible, especially in the Old Testament of Deuteronomy or Exodus, there are laws that command that people be killed for lots of ridiculous reasons. There are countless examples of mass murders commanded by God including the murder of women, infants, and children. The following are a very small amount of the passages approving of murder in the Bible. They are divided into three parts: 1) Capital Punishment Crimes, 2) Gods Murders for Stupid Reasons, 3) Murdering Children, and 4) Miscellaneous Murders. This list is long, but it barely scratches the surface of all the murders approved of in the Bible.(123HelpMe.com/78161, 2010) In conclusion, the arguments of the pro-choice and pro-life movements are both valid arguments, with the evidence that the Bible, with some exceptions, that every child should be born wanted, supports abortion. Under the right circumstances, abortion should be legal with the right medical care and in the proper time and way. Know body has the right to say in the case of a rape or incest whether you have to keep the unborn child. Alternatively, that the unborn child has to come into the world with this hanging over their head from the start. This was because of a malicious act was done and not of your own choice, but therefore neither you nor the child should be penalized for it. These happens so often in cases of pro-life and say for instance, a twelve year old girl is victim of rape that as a result of it becomes pregnant. This has already ruined that girl in the trauma that she has to overcome that has happen to them. Those circumstances is not written of the laws that prohibit abo rtions. Nor are the mothers that might die if they proceed with their pregnancies. Is that not taking one life for another? The only difference would be that one is breathing, where the other has not done so yet. In 1973 in a review of the CSA Discovery Guides, the Ragsdale litigation led a case to the most significant judicial ruling since Roe that resulted in a settlement in which plaintiffs secured the right to a legal clinic abortion during the first 18 weeks of pregnancy. Although, a similar law today might well survive constitutional scrutiny, the case was settled to the satisfaction of pro-choice advocates (Mezey, Susan Gluck; Tatalovich, Raymond; Walsh, Michael, 1994). This at least gives the child and us a chance to do what is best for all. We have enough forgotten children in the world that if we can prevent just one unhappy child or tormented soul, they will bless us all. I still believe the best way is to be careful in the first place and stop before we have to make the choice.

On The Waterfront, Terry Malloy :: Movie, Film Analysis

Terry Malloy as a â€Å"Hero†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When Terry Malloy was first introduced, he did not make any indications that he would strive for the respect that he gained throughout the story. His tough-guy behavior and compassionate attitude has made him what he is: a hero. He never revealed what he was truly made of or what he was capable of. He always had low self-esteem about himself—repeatedly calling himself a â€Å"bum.† Despite his stubbornness to change and his ignorance to others, Malloy proves himself by doing what he knows is right to be a true hero.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Throughout the whole film, Malloy displayed himself as a bum. He rarely works, and he is a has-been boxer. Others occasionally criticize him about his boxing career; explaining to him that he was no good. Because a lot of the criticism got to Terry’s head, he was unable to associate with others. This proves so with the relationship he has with Edie Doyle. He is barely able to hold the relationship with Edie, even though she is the one whom Terry loves so much. Up to this point, Malloy does not display himself as a hero, or even close to being one.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When Malloy put himself to the test, he rarely came out successful. This all changed when he saw the death of his brother, Charlie the Gent. Malloy decided to stand up for what he knew was right and went to speak with Johnny Friendly face to face. As the scene unfolded, the depiction of Malloy being a hero was relevant. He stood up for his brother, and his girlfriend. He knew what the outcome would be if he confronted the â€Å"hoods,† yet he did what he had to do for the people on the dock, and above all, for the people he cared about the most; and for this, he gained the respect and loyalty that he deserved.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  As the film progressed, Malloy’s character seemed to have changed. He became more sensitive towards Edie, and he stuck with his wits and testified against his own former friends, â€Å"the hoods.† But with every good thing, there must be something bad that comes out of it. When Malloy lost the respect of his co-workers and friends by testifying against the hoods, he became a target for blame that the people of the town needed to show that they were still behind the hoods. Yet when Malloy went on the dock and professed what he truly thought of Friendly and the others, the people of the town realized that what Terry was saying is correct, and they eventually regained there respect for Terry.

Old Growth Forest Essay

Question: a strong opponent of logging old growth forests Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I am Leeson, and today I am going to talk about whether we should log the old growth forests. Firstly, what are old growth forests? Old growth forests are those where the overstore is in the late mature growth stage with the presence of relatively large old trees, many containing hollows and often with the presence of dieback or dead branches in the crown. They are so important to the human life, as they are like the climate change mitigation. Also, a lot of animals can only live in old growth forests, just like fish can only live in water. In Victoria, we know old growth forests to be â€Å"Forests which contain significant amount of its oldest growth stage in the upper stratum. † What does this mean? It means these forests are historically, culturally, ecologically significant and valuable. Therefore, we human have no reason to log any of the old growth forest. Firstly, the old growth forests mitigate the climate change. Old-growth forests store large amounts of carbon in wood, humus, and peat, they are an important part of carbon sequestration and its impacts on climate change and climate change mitigation. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said in its 2007 report: â€Å"In the long term, a sustainable forest management strategy aimed at maintaining or increasing forest carbon stocks, while producing an annual sustained yield of timber, fibre or energy from the forest, will generate the largest sustained mitigation benefit. As we know, the climate problem is one of the most serious problems that human are facing to, if we keep logging the old growth forests for human living while we are polluting the environment for human development, we will not have a nice future to be with. So stop logging the old growth forest! Secondly, old growth forests are the only home for a lot of animals. Image if I drive a bulldozer through in your home, how would this make you feel? Where would you go? The ecologically value and significance of old- growth-forests is they can do something that other forests cannot do: they act as the home of various forms of wildlife. Without old growth forests, where would they live? The report from Bureau of Rural Sciences from Australian Government said: â€Å"A number of wildlife species are reliant on these types of forest because of the range of nesting hollows and greater structural complexity they have in comparison with forests in earlier stages of development. Obviously logging the old growth forests indicates killing plenty of wildlife, and it is not humane at all! That’s why we shouldn’t log the old growth forests. In conclusion, the old growth forests are acting a important role in nature, not only do they house various forms of wildlife, but they also store more carbon then they emit, so that to mitigate the climate change. Hence, we should not log the old growth forest, for any human use. Thank you!

Henry Lawson Essay

Henry Lawson, conflicted and brilliant was hailed as one of the â€Å"greatest writers of Australia† during the Colonial Period. Famous for his authenticity and vivid realism, many historians have often noted that Lawson acted as a spokesman of sorts for Australians and is acclaimed as a landmark in Australian literature. From one of his many works stems the short poem entitled â€Å"Poverty† depicting the themes of poverty, penury and hypocrisy. Lawson attempts in two stanzas to capture the emotions of those who are under financial difficulties. He also touches upon several social issues of how people, specifically preachers and poets, often try to glorify and romanticize poverty as a virtue. He criticizes the hypocrisy of those who cite poverty as an asset, something to be thankful for and a building block of character when they themselves know nothing of the realities and actualities of being poor as it goes against all his personal notions and sentiments of poverty being the root of all evil –â€Å"the cause of half the crime, the cause of half the error! – The new mantra nowadays is how everybody is looking to lead a more â€Å"meaningful† life. Greed and avarice is now copious in nearly every social circle and it compels practically everyone to step back once in a while to ask: Is this worth it? Most often the temptation and thirst dominates the small seeds of doubt and it is on this note which is most similar to â€Å"Poverty†. World population has nearly tripled in the last 50 years alone and the intense pressure and the constant rat race to make more money [and lots of it] increases along with the competition. Despite the fact the many people hold the opinion that poverty is a curse, statistics and surveys on people with a lower quality of life has indicated quite the opposite. On the contrary, poorer people tend to be more at peace and contented with life. With none so many material possessions to blind them from the true essence of life, they are able to lead a humble existence and learn to enjoy small joys and little surprises, in exact accordance with the phrase: Money can’t do you everything. Throughout the ages, this world has changed and shifted until it has become the nearly unrecognizable haven it is today to nearly 6. 3 billion people, modifying and shaping societies and judgements along with it. Stronger and more dominant personalities may prevail over weaker minds but the essential truth remains the same. You are your own person with individual opinions. So the same principle applies to the question: â€Å"Is Poverty still relevant today? † This being a firmly subjective question, there is no real universal truth or answer for it. Only what you think.
